Thanks for all your help. I've been away so only just had chance to look at this.. All sorted now - I needed to upgrade my Giganews account as I apparently had the 'old' bronze account and now I can connect with SSL

Just a quick note did you try another port instead of 119 like even using 443 SSL should work over a VPN i would think, maybe the VPN company you are using blocks traffic on 119
