http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Hi,
I have just bought a new mac and am trying to get Sabnzb up and running. I don't know a great deal about all of this as a friend of mine set it up for me, he's not around at the moment and I have searched around on the forums but I am a bit stuck..
I went into the config, added all the server details as they are on the old mac - host is news.giganews.com, port 119, username and password (my giganews details), connections 8, retention 0 days, timeout 120 seconds.
I save the changes and 'test server' and all I get is this message - 'http://localhost:8080 Timed out'
Please can someone help and tell me if I'm missing something? I don't understand how it can work on one mac but not on the other with all the same configuration?
Thanks in advance

Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Does it download?
It could be just an issue with the test, which uses a shorter time-out.
BTW: a server timeout of 120 is a bit over the top, that's two minutes.
60 is a typical value. But that's separate from the "test" issue.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me so soon. No, nothing downloads, the file just sits there saying 300mb to download and the timers are just sat on 0:00:00 left.

Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Hi, I have just successfully downloaded a file, I switched off my VPN.. I didn't realise this would cause a problem? As the whole reason for me getting it was to protect my privacy.. Is there a way to use sabnzb with my VPN on? Thanks.
Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Sab doesn't know or care about that. It just tries to connect and is oblivious to whether or not you're using a vpn. Maybe your vpn provider doesn't like usenet.digitaldisguise wrote:Hi, I have just successfully downloaded a file, I switched off my VPN.. I didn't realise this would cause a problem? Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Quick test. Enable your VPN.
Use telnet or on Windows the Putty program (google it) to connect to the server directly:
telnet servername 119
You should see the welcome message of the server.

Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Telnet.. ? Is it this - http://www.emtec.com/download.html
It is definitely the VPn causing the problem, I tested it with and without it connected, and when connected nothing downloads.
It must be giganews that has the problem with it then? If you say sabnzb doesn't know or care about a VPN. Maybe I should try a diff news server?

Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
That's one of the many telnet programs.
It will allow you to test the connection without SABnzbd.
The alternative is that you do a test with an alternative Usenet client like Grabit.

Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Thanks. I tried NZB drop and got nowhere either.. Didn't try it with VPN disconnected though as I had that brainwave later on in the evening, will try later. There must be plenty of people who download nzb's and use a VPN for protection though surely?

If you're using SSL, who could be eavesdropping?

Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Don't think my ISP supports it, I tried all the different ports and no joy
Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
Your ISP?
You mean your Usenet provider? Find one that does support it.
There are plenty nowadays.

Re: http://localhost:8080 Timed out?
I use Giganews. So are you saying with SSL checked (providing Giganews supports it) that my ISP can't see what I am doing?
Please excuse my ignorance but this isn't my area, I'm a retoucher buy trade, and a friend helped me set up initially but he is out of the country. He told me this is a much more secure and 'under the radar' method of downloading, rather than torrents)
