Advice for server configuration

I would appreciate advice on "best practice" for setting up my servers. My primary provider is Astraweb. Would there be any benefits or drawbacks in having both the eu and us servers set as Active? I might add that I also have a BlockNews account which I have set as Backup following advice on some forums. None of the servers are set as Optional, would there be a point in doing so?
I have studied numerous threads on this topic, but haven't been able to get the answer from those...

I'd set the Astraweb server on the other continent as backup server,
although you can set both as primary servers.
The total connections count is then divided over two servers.
A block server should always be set as a backup server. so that it's only used when needed.
"Optional" is only used for unreliable servers (frequently off-line) that would
otherwise block jobs with missing articles.

Ok, thanks shypike!
I'll choose the AW eu server as primary, since I live in Sweden it should give the best speed, and the AW us server as backup together with the BN server.
So, if the eu server says "I don't have this article", SAB will ask one of the backups (randomly selected ?). In case of the us server, it probably won't have it either, so SAB will go ahead and ask BlockNews for the same article, and hopefully get it! That's what I'm hoping for anyway

Got an increasing number of incompletes from AW lately, thats why I a got myself a blockaccount on BN as a fill, should it be needed.

Recently, the US servers have less materilal ( due to DMCA notifications?)
So your setup would work fine.
If the US and block server are both backup, then SABnzbd will pick one arbitrarily.
