It would be nice if a new version of SAB could be out, supporting this before the switch

We already have for the last three of four years.
At least when you run Windows or OSX. Unix variants with installed SSL support also.
It's up to you to modify your newzbin RSS feed URLs.
All other stuff already uses HTTPS.
