Spontaneous restart with VMware Server

Post by wverdouw »

Hello all,

A few days ago I installed on my server Windows 2008 R2. Then I installed VMware Server 2.0.2-203138. After that, I pointed VMware to a previously created VM with Windows Server 2003, in which I have SabNzbd+ running. That is, as soon as I start SabNzbd+, both servers (the virtual W2k3 as well as the physical W2k8) spontaneous restart. Or at least, within minutes. In the eventlog of either of the servers, I cannot find a clue that gives away what's happening.
By the way, I created the VM with W2k3 and SabNzbd+ in it on the same physical machine, only then I had Windows 2003 SP2 installed on it and VMware Server 2.0.0-122956 on that.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this? Or better, what I could possibly do to stop this from happening? Of course, I can always install Windows 2003 on the physical machine, but I'd rather go forware to Win2k8.

By the way, VMware ESXi does not install on my machine (I tried both 3.5 and 4.0).  :'( I know, that's too bad.

Version: SabNzbd+ 0.5.6
OS: Windows Server 2003 SP2
Install-type: Windows Installer
Skin (if applicable): Default
Firewall Software: None
Are you using IPV6? no
Is the issue reproducible? yes

Anyone a clue?
Thanks in advance.

I thought the log indicated a problem with the queue (can't remember the exact contents). I decided to remove the installation completely.
After that I cleaned the uncompleted folder and installed the whole of SabNzbd+ again.

Then for a little while it all seemed to work again. But after about a half hour the same thing happened: spontaneous reboot of boot servers (or at least the physical one and then of course the virtual one as well).

Any thoughts?

Well, if SABnzbd is causing the server to crash, that looks rather bad for Microsoft and VMWare, doesn't it?
SABnzbd is a user-level program, so if it crashes how can it take the OS with it?
We're not taking Win98 or WinXP any more.

What you can try is the Alpha release for 0.6.0 which is built with a different version of Python.
I can make you member of the Alpha test group.

I guess we can give it a try.
Can you lead me along? Thanks.
