Question about limiting download speeds

I'm fairly new to usenet, only been using it for a couple months now.  One thing I was wondering, is if many people choose to limit their download speeds, or if everything tends to leave it wide open.  I ask because when I don't set a limit, it literally cripples my internet connection.  As long as I'm not doing anything else this doesn't really matter, but the one thing that I'm wondering about is how it affects something like Sick Beard.  I use Sick Beard to automatically download TV episodes, and I'm guessing if I'm already downloading something then when Sick Beard tries to search for new episodes it will simply time out.

I guess I was just wondering how many KB/s I should leave for something like that.

You need to experiment with the limit.
An alternative may be to tell your router to treat NNTP traffic as low priority.
Your router needs to support something like Quality-of-Service.

Could you elaborate any on the NNTP priority option?  My router is a Linksys WRT54G running the latest DD-WRT firmware.

When I downoad with FULL speed I get    1500 - 1600
When I set my speed to 1100 , We can still surf the web / play online pokergames without any problems

I must say that I download with my home server & have 2 desktops for the rest

Just took a stab at setting it up, but unfortunately it only seemed to make everything worse.  Made sabnzbd download speeds incredibly erratic, but unfortunately didn't seem to improve normal web browsing much at all.

In that case you need to set a usable limit in SABnzbd.

One alternative (although it will cost you money) is www.netlimiter.com
That program does traffic shaping on your PC. I have no personal experience.
