Download Folder Problem

My download folder is way to full of things I want to remove. The folder opens just fine, but after a few seconds it closes and my "mail download folder" opens preventing me from doing any clean-up. Previously, I had no problem but in the past month I can't keep the folder open. I have a MAC OS 10.5.8 with a ton of memory and space. I'm using SAB 0.4.11.
