Does the situation correct itself after some time?
We have seen lots of problems in the past with Zonealarm,
are you sure it allows all SABnzbd traffic?
Do other Usenet program work OK (e.g. Grabit)?

Giganews shouldn't be a problem, although they sometimes have temporary
connection problems like any other site (though rare).
You can try to install the Giganews "accelerator" software.

Do you have SSL checked for your server in config>servers? (It shouldn't be if using port 119)

Thanks for the quick replies.
I have disabled zonealarm for now. Also unchecked SSL.

Warning message now reads:
2009-12-18 04:11:04,390 ERROR Permissions (None) not correct, use OCTAL notation!
2009-12-18 04:14:07,155 ERROR Permissions (None) not correct, use OCTAL notation!

i appear to be downloading now as the home page says:
Download Dir: 22.15 GB - Complete Dir: 22.15 GB - Download speed: 49.94 KB/s - Queued: 3284.33/3360.19 MB
WARNINGS(2)!

However this does seem to leave me vulnerable to unwanted security attacks.
Please advise

It looks as if you tried to connect using SSL on a non-SSL port (119)
Try re-enabling Zone Alarm. It should work?
