As I know next to nothing about computers I was hoping someone could help me sort this.

Doesn't the message "requires user/password" ring a bell?
Most Usenet providers require a username and password.

Virgin media do not usually require a password. Not sure what is going on here, not on a Virgin connection at the moment to verify if there is something wrong with their servers.

... as long as the OP is on the virginmedia network. Otherwise you get "480 Authentication Required":

So, OP: are you still on your own Virginmedia connection?

That may be it then.

If I remember correctly virgin just use highwinds media's servers and if it detects you are on an IP from virgin it will let you logon without the need for a password (at a lower retention, the user+pass of a paid highwinds reseller would have to be supplied for higher retention).

If you are on a virgin network, I would contact their support.

The error message seems quite common. See http://www.google.com/search?q=%22480+a ... nmedia.com

Maybe those forums give a solution. Otherwise contact Virginmedia.
