ultimate server build 100Gbps?

Post by fastwhynot »

what server build would you recommend to take advantage of a 100gbps internet connection

what would be the cpu choice, amd or intel?
ssd array?
recommended settings

what is the record for fastest download?

already use a cheap mac mini and get 850MB/s I’m just curious what will it take to push this.

Looking forward to your test results!

CPU with high single-core performance.
A decent amount of RAM (for caching)
Fast NVMe. A different VME for Incomplete and Complete. I know nothing about arrays.

> recommended settings

DirectUnpack off.
Multiple newsservers at same prio. Low ping time to those newsservers. A lot of connections (50? 80?)

> what is the record for fastest download?

I think your 850 MB/s

> already use a cheap mac mini and get 850MB/s

On a home connection? AFAIK XGSPON has a limit at 8 Gbps, so 850 MB/s might be the max.

What are the specs of the SABnzbd setup? Please post the output of SABnzbd -> Wrench.

Post as text?

I used Google Lens to convert your https://imgur.com/49ZsTTM to text. See below. CPU performance not too special, fast disk, Internet speed lowish. As you get 850 MB/s, the Internet Bandwidth measurement is probably wrong.

You should do the test while SABnzbd and your machine are not doing anything else.

System performance (Pystone)

based on your input Im going to get a intel ultra 9 285k
rack mounted, looking for chassis and cpu coolers to support it. too bad not dual psu options.

will keep you posted it

also need to get ram and ssd, any pointers on that?

Run a "cluster" with pre-queue scripting

and how much of the 100 Gbps can you use? With fast.com and with SABnzbd's built-in Internet speed tester?

A 100Gbps box sounds fun, but for Usenet you’ll hit the hardware wall long before the provider wall.

I have Newsdemon and I get 50 connections, which is plenty for gigabit-class lines, but nowhere near what you’d need to feed 100Gbps. I’ve been able to fill my 10Gbps seedbox connection with that, but I think your hardware will crap out before NewsDemon does. They probably push no telling how many hundreds or thousands of Gbps.

You’ll need a high core-count platform (AMD EPYC Genoa/Bergamo or Intel Xeon Scalable) just to keep up with the SSL encryption overhead of 50 simultaneous connections at multi-gig speeds. Striped NVME SSD.

The trick is to pick larger file sets (multi-GB archives, Blu-ray sized posts, etc.) so your disks can stream sequentially instead of getting hammered with random I/O. Pair that with a striped NVMe RAID and a fast NIC, and suddenly ND looks like it scales forever.

I’ve had good success working with the NewsDemon support team when trying to max my speeds. They are very friendly and quick to respond.

That’s an awesome CPU.

I’d suggest trying to get multiple providers into your setup too. Now that I think about it you may run into issues with providers NiC cards. If they have a 100G on the server chances are you won’t be the only person on that box.

Where is your server located? You’ll want to get a provider with a location close to where your box is.
