Download speed

Post by Klaatu13 »

Hi out there ,
not sure if this is the right place but let's see.

Question: How do you increase your download speed ?

The reason I ask is, at home I roughly get around 7MB/s ( my BB is around 65MB/s ), but when I was over at my friends for the week, I was getting any where between 16 & 20+ MB/s ? So I'm unsure why that is, and can I increase my DL Speed.

Any suggestions would be grateful.

Bytes versus bits?
Read https://sabnzbd.org/wiki/faq#toc31

Two tests:
https://fast.com/
In SABnzbd's upper right corner, click on the wrench symbol ("Status and interface options"), then click on first tab Status, and there click on the Refresh Arrow. What is the full line at Internet Bandwidth? For example Internet Bandwidth 28.4 MB/s 227.2 Mbps

EDIT: You're testing wired I hope?

If it's bits versus bytes, call your ISP to order more bandwidth. If they are able to that, they will be happy to deliver that.

Good.

Final checks:
1) What do you get via https://fast.com/ ? I assume also 55 - 60 Mbps
2) what plan do you have from your ISP? So: How much bandwidth.? If they provide less than whay you pay for: call them. If they provide the correct amount, call them to order more.

Hi,
I get 63Mbps on Fast and 63.2 using Speedtest.

I'm old now ( OAP) live in the UK, when you ask about 'Bandwidth' is this my Download Speed I get from my provider ( Vodafone ) or is it something else ?

Apologies for being a bit dim here ;-)

OK, so again: all correct: you get 63 Mbps from you ISP, which is about 6 MB/s (divide by 10 to get from bits to Bytes).

If you want faster, talk to your ISP Vodafone if that is possible. If on DSL / copper, it might be the max. If on coax, you might get higher (depending on where you live). If Vodafone can put / has you on Fiber, Vodafone can give you much more ... if you pay for it.

Instead of calling them, you could fill out your address on https://www.vodafone.co.uk/broadband and see what they have to offer you.

Note: 63 Mbps is not bad for downloading. You get your films faster than you can download them.

Hi Sander,
many thanks for you time and input, it just seems strange that at home I only get around 7Mbs yet when at my friends ( Suffolk ) I was getting around 20Mbs ? Any idea why ?

Still thanks again for your help.

Just like different cars have different top speeds. It depends on what you buy.

FWIW: My neighbour has 450 Mbps via his ISP. I have the same ISP, but I have 75 Mbps ... because I decided to spend less.

So call your ISP
