Download Speed

Hi,

Not sure if its Sabnzbd issue but I am confused and not sure where to message.

I have 1 gbps internet connection so should be able to download c. 100MB/s.

Router speed tests hit 90-100MB/s.
Steam download via. WIFI hit 100MB/s.
Speed tests via. WIFI 90-100MB/s same as router.

When downloading using Sabnzbd & tried another software same issue - I'm capped out at c. 60-70MB/s (which yes I understand is not bad) but I don't get why I can't get max speed.

I'm based in UK and servers are EU based, each server I can get c. 50MB/s download speed.
1) newsdemon
2) Astraweb
3) Eweka

With all three servers connected I still can't get past 70MB/s.

Maybe its a UK issue connecting to EU servers that is throttling the speed, but if I can achieve c. 50MB/s on each server and I'm using 3x servers, should I be able to achieve the 100MB/s?

Appreciate any help.

Hard drive doesn't seem bottle neck: Gen4 nvm Firecuda.

Thanks,

Matt

Please consider correct notation:
"mb" is milli-bit
"MB" is mega-byte ... and that is what you mean.

Now your problem: In SABnzbd's upper right corner, click on the wrench symbol ("Status and interface options"), then click on first tab Status, and there click on the Refresh Arrow. Post the values in the lower part (pystone, disk speeds, internet speed) here.

Also: does that window show a line like "Download speed limited by CPU (12x) Disk speed (31x)"? If so post it here too.

This is output from a system I have:

Code: Select all

Used cache 0 B (0 articles)
Download speed limited by CPU (12x) Disk speed (31x)
System performance (Pystone) 136601 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5690 @ 3.47GHz SSSE3
Download folder speed 18 MB/s /home/sander/Downloads/incomplete
Complete folder speed 11.7 MB/s /home/sander/Downloads/complete
Internet Bandwidth 73.3 MB/s 586.4 Mbps
SABnzbd tells what the problem is: "Download speed limited by CPU (12x) Disk speed (31x)".

And you can see that from the numbers (with some experience): CPU speed is OK-ish (136601 pystone), disks are slow, Internet speed is great.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, your right on the mb/MB - my post is a bit confusing - I'll edit it.

See below stats:
Used cache 0 B (0 articles)
System performance (Pystone) 388772 AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor AVX2
Download folder speed 2284.2 MB/s C:\Users\matth\Downloads\incomplete
Complete folder speed 2026 MB/s C:\Users\matth\Downloads\complete
Internet Bandwidth 33.1 MB/s 264.8 Mbps

Couldn't see any error messages.

I just downloaded 10gb test file and can get 65 MB/s - so not sure why Internet Bandwidth showing so low?

I see: you have a beast machine! CPU and Disk are not the bottleneck.

From your other post: do you use Wifi on the system running SAB? If so: what if you (temporarily) use wired?

Thanks, moved everything and tried line instead of WIFI 112 MB/s download speed ! ???

Just to add some more confusion: WIFI next to router still same issue 70MB/s - even though 5ghz strong signal showing 240 MB/s transmit speed on WIFI adapter.

Odd that steam on WIFI can hit 105 MB/s. Must be something to do with the router ports or firewall or setup of my router or encryption.

OK, good. Nothing can beat a wired connection. ;-)

About wifi: you could play with the number of newsserver connections. And: less is more. So lower the number of connections.

I just tried: just 1 (one) newsserver connection to eweka gives me 10 MB/s.

Solved it! - did some more tests and still confused..

Wired achieved c. 112 MB/s with all three servers connected c. 120 connections.
WIFI would achieve c. 70 MB/s all three servers c. 120 connections. It must be as you said multiple connections / multi servers must be impacting WIFI performance.

Individual server connections I still had same issue wired / WIFI being slow performance.

Someone on reddit had similar issue and was able to achieve good speeds on newsfarm, so I tried this server and able to get max speeds on single connection Wired & WIFI.

See below my speeds via. sabnzbd downloading multiple 10gb files:

Wired connection:
Eweka 80 MB/s. / 1 connection 7 MB/s.
Astraweb 80 MB/s / 1 connection 7 MB/s.
Newsdemon 61 MB/s / 1 connection 2.6MB/s.
Newsfarm 105 MB/s / 1 connection 6 MB/s.

All three servers before trying Newsfarm max 112 MB/s using wired connection.

WIFI (Next to router)
Eweka 72 MB/s (35 Connections). / 1 connection 7 MB/s.
Astraweb 72 MB/s (35 Connections). / 1 connection 7 MB/s.
Newsdemon 53 MB/s (35 Connections). / 1 connection 2 MB/s.
Newsfarm 102 MB/s (35 Connections). / 1 connection 6 MB/s.

All three servers before trying Newsfarm max was 72 MB/s.

Must be a routing issue, pings to all servers are absolutely fine c. 10-15 ms.

Thanks so much for help!

I'll cancel the other subscriptions and stick with Newsfarm for now as solved my problem.

Don't forget it's not only about speed ... also about completeness. And one newsserver/provider is a bit risky. You can't walk on one leg

I seem to be having a similar issue. My internet speed is 2633 Down/ 4136 Up. When downloading on SAB I can't get more than 100MBs. Network switch and NICs are 10gb. Could it be a setting in SAB? I have tried Giganews, Newshosting, and Eweka but no improvements. Here are some details from SAB:

Used cache
0 B (0 articles)
Download speed limited by
CPU (888x)
System performance (Pystone)
183753 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6950X CPU @ 3.00GHz AVX2
Download folder speed
491 MB/s C:\SABnzb_DL\Incomplete
Complete folder speed
513.3 MB/s C:\SABnzb_DL\Complete
Internet Bandwidth
20.8 MB/s 166.4 Mbps

Appreciate any help..

You are hitting the limit of what Python can do.
Could you try 3.7.0RC1? Is it any faster?

I tried 3.7.0 and got the same results. It starts dl at about 120MBs and drops to low 90s. My brother has the same setup and uses 3.6.1 downloading 350 to 550 MBs. We use the same router, Asus Rapture 16000 with dual WAN. Speedtest to the SAB server is where it should be, however, SAB stays below 100MBs. I also checked his settings with mine to be sure there are the same.

My brother's data:

Used cache 0 B (0 articles)
Download speed limited by CPU (138x) Disk speed (55x)
System performance (Pystone) 377671 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz AVX512VL+VBMI2
Download folder speed 504.4 MB/s D:\SabNZBD\Incomplete
Complete folder speed 573.6 MB/s D:\SabNZBD\Complete
Internet Bandwidth 128 MB/s 1024 Mbps

Could CPU be an issue?

Could CPU be an issue?
Yes

SAB tells your download speed is limited by your CPU: "Download speed limited by CPU (888x)", meaning 888 times the CPU was the bottleneck.

Your brother has a more recent (5 generations / years newer) and much faster CPU.

EDIT:

What do you and your brother get on https://fast.com/ , because "100 MB/s" could also be a sign of Gigabit ethernet, so not 10Gbps.

In 3.7.0RC1, could you go to Config > Specials and change num_simd_decoders to 4?
Then restart SABnzbd.
