Sabnzbdplus hangs randomly

Hi All,
I'm new here - and new to using the software too.
I have it installed on Ubuntu 9.04. I'm not 100% sure which version it is (laptop is at home), but it's direct from the repositories, installed with APT.
Version: Installed from APT
OS: Ubuntu 9.04
Install-type: Linux repository
Firewall Software: None
Are you using IPV6? No
Is the issue reproducible? (Sort of)
Basically, the problem I'm having is that my machine is hangs during download. The very first time I ran it, I got a great 400kbps and downloaded about 1Gb fine. Now, I start it up and any download starts out great, however after normally about 20 minutes, my machine hangs up completely, to the point that the mouse won't even move. I have to hard reset the machine and after that, it repeats the process above.
Some things to note are the following:
Ubuntu is installed on a USB stick (4Gb) and boots from there.
I have a 400Gb external drive mounted FAT on a USB port.
I use mount --bind to create a link to this drive in a folder in my home folder
I have changed the download and temp path to point to this new folder.
It's possible that my strange drive config is causing the problem, although I can't imagine why this wouldn't work.
Any advice or pointers would be much appreciated. Further, is there any sort of logfile I can look at which might help? None of the default files contain any info on a previous "hang."
Thanks in advance.
