While troubleshooting I set Settings > Category > default to Download instead of +Delete.

This was some time ago and I finally tracked down the problem. Now I have many many directories of .par2 and .rar files.

The downloads are still showing on my history tab. Is there a way to force the repair and unpack steps? what can I do? (I'm on a mac.)

Unfortunately, there is not.. You have to do manual par2 check and then unpack (or just unpack first and only do par2 check if it fails to unpack).
