is there a way to change the date display to MM/DD/YYYY ?

it is presently set for European format DD/MM/YYYY

edit: using the NEW Glitter -Night theme.

Did you try the Status and interface settings window? It's that little wrench icon on top.
Then go to Interface settings. Your format should be there.
