Same hardware + same configs + upgraded OS = slow download

Post by TheGremlyn »

First off, let me preface this by saying I know that my current max downloadpseed of 2.5 MBps is faster than many people in US can get right now, but I don't care... I want to use it all! :)

So I have had the same HTPC setup for the past coupe of years. It started out running Ubuntu 11.10, eventually upgraded to 12.04, and finally decided to upgrade to 14.04. The whole time I had no issues maxing out my connection, which recently was upgraded to 50 Mbps down (7 MBps). I wasn't on 14.04 for more than 24 hours before I decided that, due to an issue with MythTV, I needed a fresh start. I can't remember if I downloaded anything during that short time on 14.04 and saw my previous max speeds.

I copied all my configs for sabnzbd, sickbeard, and xbmc over to a backup drive for faster install later, which helped a lot. Everything is back up and running, but I seem to be stuck at an artificial maximum download speed of 2.5 Mbps. Whats more, I did not used to pause during download and saw no negative affects on my download speed, but now unpacking causes a drop in my download speed! My CPU is not pegged and I have free memory. I have tried setting cache articles to a high number, to unlimited, with no affect.

I can't figure it out and it is REALLY bugging me. I want my max download speed back! Please help?

Speedtest shows everything is fine: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3675613174

Wireless routers promise a lot but they have trouble maintaining a steady high load.

So this ended up being nothing to do with sabnzbd, but I figure I will post my solution here anyway - just in case anyone else happens across slow download speeds for an unknown reason.

The trick is: disabled WMM on your router. I found a little evidence online pointing to this maybe being an issue with Linksys/Cisco routers only, but I can't be sure of that. I'm evening running TomatoUSB on my routers and it still affected me, so maybe it's something hardware-wise in the routers that is a problem?

UPDATE: Crap, disabling WMM messes with n speeds, so that is off the table. There has to be a solution to this...
