sabnzbd can't connect to internet

I've been using sabnzbd and sickbeard for a long time. No problems. It stopped working this week. It simply fails to connect to the internet. No connections are made to the usenet server. It can't reach nzb servers to get information. The log indicates it's retrying over and over. When I test the usenet server, it fails. Strangely, Sickbeard is having the exact same problem.

Everything else on my computer seems to be working fine. Usenet client apps work fine.

Latest version. Windows 8.1.

I've tried the following:

- Updating and reinstalling sabnzbd (and sickbeard)
- Updating and turning off the firewall (Comodo)
- Turning off the VPN
- Bypassing the router and connecting my computer directly to the cable modem

I didn't change anything in the settings. I'm trying to figure out what might have changed on my computer to cause this problem. Windows 8.1 did get some updates...could that break it? Java update?

Thanks!

You're using VPN?
It is possible that you now have to internet connections and SABnzbd is using the inactive one.
Check what you have with the "ipconfig" program.
BTW: we've seen issues with the Comodo firewall sometimes.

I found a 'fix'. If I run sabnzbd and sickbeard as administrator, then it works. But is this a proper fix?

Re: VPN, yes, it does look like I have two internet connections (with separate IP address) in ipconfig when the VPN is running. If this is the problem, how can I tell the program to use the active connection?

Is there a firewall/antivirus you'd recommend?

1. It should not make a difference. Possibly the VPN software sets some access right on the network connections,
but I'm don't know how that would work.
(Very) maybe it is the firewall, supposing it does something with access rights.

2. You cannot, it's a problem in the software libraries that we need to use.
The only work-around is to setup "static routing" in Windows, which is a rather complex thing to do.

3. Most simply work. Some specific versions of firewall software doesn't.
Complaining to the manufacturer may help (assuming you're sure it's the firewall).
In this case I would not immediately suspect the firewall.
BTW: disabling is usually not enough to make the problem go away, un-installing will.
