Vista users: free downloading!

Good news for Vista users (finally
): It seems you can download for free. I tried it and it works for me.
Based on the post on
http://ipv6-or-no-ipv6.blogspot.com/200 ... ntage.html , (a lot of) Vista users appear to have "under water" working IPv6 connectivity. Easy test: visit the URLs mentionned in the blog post. Remark: as mentionned in the blog post, you need to use litteral IPv6 address in your webbrowser and in ping.
If that works, just fill out news.ipv6.eweka.nl in SABnzbd, and start downloading. Retention is about 170 days.
I justed tested it, and had a succesful download with "[Avg-Speed]: 259kB/s". Not bad for an easy and free download service. :-)
Please give feedback. If it works, this info can be added / injected into the thread "Free Newsservers" (
http://forums.sabnzbd.org/index.php?topic=51.0)
(Technical remark: SAB does not need the litteral IPv6 address and is OK with the FQDN. Apparantly SAB (or python?) does it's own resolving, and does not rely on Vista's resolving settings?)

Most folk at the moment are connected to IPv4 ISP's and would need a tunnel broker for it to work
At least that's my understanding of it.

That was my thought too ... until this morning. Not anymore. See my post: Windows Vista has IPv6 connectivity built-in (via Teredo tunneling). Your ISP doesn't need to provide any IPv6, your modem doesn't need to do IPv6, you can even be behind a NAT-device.
So, are you on Vista? Please *test* it (see the URLs in the blog post and the SAB/eweka-setting) and post the result here.
EDIT: there must be a teredo gateway somewhere. And the further away / less reliable that gateway, the less reliable is your IPv6 connection. So, it would be great if your own ISP provides a teredo gateway, but it's not necessary.

I am on Vista and use eweka, but with a sixxs tunnel.
Not only that but I'm at work and wont be home for another two weeks so can't test it
(Tha't why I ADORE Sabnzbd+. I can access it from work)
Will drop the tunnel and try it when I (eventually) get home.

Great. Let me know. The first check you can do is have a look at "ipfconfig": it should show a 2001; address for the teredo tunnel.

Hate to burst the bubble, but this teredo stuff is just another way of setting up an ipv6 tunnel. Just like 6to4 (which also doesn't require a tunnel broker) and 'real' tunnels such as sixxs. Difference being that it can be setup without much/any configuration and doesn't require a publicly routable ipv4 address; at the expense of usually being slower (see the irratic traceroute in post #1), not providing any real point-of-presence choice, no subnets, and so on. If you can get a proper tunnel that will likely give you better results with usenet than this method.

I agree. And the bottom line is that you get newsgroup downloading for free.
And that's my post about. I'm not saying anything else.

Must be dependant on your ISP, with mine it doesn't work.
(Or the router maybe?)

You turned off the sixxs tunnel, and then there was no IPv6 connectivity? Did "ipconfig" show any public IPv6 address?

I didn't explain properly.
On my Ubuntu box I have a sixx setup (aiccu), that works fine.
My unmodified Vista box doesn't give any result on news.ipv6.eweka.nl.

I checked on my neighbor's Windows Vista, and he has a working IPv6 connection (via Teredo) too: "You are accessing this server over IPv6 from 2001:0:d5c7:a2ca:10a9:31c:abae:4ee". FYI: I've changed the last hex digits to avoid 'spying'.
I was able to download from news.ipv6.eweka.nl: "Download speed: 213.57 KB/s". Quite nice again.
So I really hope others will try Vista with SAB and news.ipv6.eweka.nl too ...
Technical stuff:
It both works via his own wireless connection (Speedtouch modem connected to his ISP Het Net hetnet.nl) and via my own wired Zyxel modem to telfort.nl. (I must confess I had at first his laptop connected to my Wifi which provides Sixxs-connectivity via RADVD on my OpenWRT, so that could be a trigger for Vista, but I guess it's not)
Some explanation on Teredo addresses:
The first 32 bits of a Teredo IPv6 address are always 2001:0000, which can be written as 2001:0:
The last 32 bits of a Teredo IPv6 address are the XOR FF FF FF FF of the public IPv4 address of the user/NAT device.

More evidence: the 3rd Vista I'm trying, and on this Vista IPv6 is working too. Notice: IPv6 is working out-of-the-box. Not any activation or configuriation needed by the user.
Download speed is "141 KB/s" from news.ipv6.eweka.nl, which is close to the line speed of the 1.5 Mbps connection. Quite good.

If you want, you could "sudo apt-get install miredo" to see if miredo/teredo works on your connection. I think you might need to disable the sixxs tunnel.
