Please help!

Post by asterz »

I am brand new to the whole NZB thing, but I used to be active on Usenet over 7 years or so ago-- I've pretty much forgotten everything about it . I'm pretty lost as to how this works. I downloaded SABnzbd and followed the instructions to drag the application into my app folder (Lion 10.7.5). When I click on the icon, nothing happens. I tried clicking on an nzb file, I tried dragging the file to the SABnzbd icon, nothing does anything. At first when I tried it, I had no Usenet service account. But then I read your getting started faq http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/getting-started and realized I had to have one. So I did that. I didn't download any newsreader client, but your list didn't say to do that? And newsgroupreviews.com lists SABnzbd itself as a newsgroup reader so..? I must say despite usually being able to figure out stuff like this, I am stumped. Any guidance would be very appreciated.

Does a fat down-arrow show up in OSX's top menu bar?
Does SABnzbd report itself through the Notification Center?

There is no fat arrow (assuming you mean the SABnzbd icon?). I don't think Notification Center is available in Lion-- I think it came out in Mountain Lion.

btw, if I try to drag the SABnzbd application to the trash, I get the message:
The item "SABnzbd+" can’t be moved to the Trash because it’s open.

Open a Terminal window and type:
/Applications/SABnzbd/Contents/MacOS/SABnzbd --console

I'm sorry, doing this from memory is always a risk. This is the correct way:

/Applications/SABnzbd.app/Contents/MacOS/SABnzbd --console

I did that and now I can't tell what is going on. The terminal window returns what looks like the same code you just gave me:
/Applications/SABnzbd.app/Contents/MacOS/SABnzbd --console
Nothing else changes, but if I then try to quit terminal, I get:
Do you want to close this window?
Closing this window will terminate the running processes: login, bash, SABnzbd.
Double clicking on the app icon still does nothing.

In Activity Monitor, SABnzbd shows as an active process using 100% of CPU. It is at the top of the list of processes when sorted by CPU usage.

p.s. the app itself is titled "SABnzbd+" on my computer, not "SABnzbd"

If this doesn't work, you did not install the software.
Did you drag the SABnzbd icon from the opened DMG file to "Programs"?

On a mac, the folder is called Applications. And I did install it, because the icon "SABnzbd+" is sitting in the Applications folder, and like I said, after I double-click on it, Activity Monitor shows that it is running and supposedly using a lot of cpu (100%).

Possibly you installed it in a different place. Check with Finder.
First stop any running SABnzbd before starting it again.
If you are not able to start it from a Terminal, there's no way to diagnose properly.

Obviously, it is starting, as I showed you above. Whether I double-click the icon or type that terminal command, it shows up in Activity Monitor as being launched and an active process. However there is nothing else beyond the fact that it is running, no interface, no options. And after typing the terminal command, when I try to quit terminal it informs me that
Closing this window will terminate the running processes: login, bash, SABnzbd.
so obviously, the application is running. It just isn't doing anything that I can see.

Here you can see the path is correct:

Does any output show on the Terminal window?
Was SABnzbd stopped before you started through Terminal?

Despite the fact that it shows up like SABnzbd+ in Finder, the path is really /Applications/SABnzbd.app

I made sure SABnzbd was stopped before I tried the Terminal command. I can quit it by highlighting it and choosing "Quit Process" in Activity Monitor.

After I type the command
Applications/SABnzbd.app/Contents/MacOS/SABnzbd --console
in Terminal, no output shows, but it seems to accept the command, and then I get the rectangular prompt character again. "Show Inspector" brings this:
