[solved] sabnzbd freezes my pc (win7)

first off, i am using sab for now 2 years and never had an issue. But since a week or 2, it keeps randomly freezing my pc while downloading (not even during repair/verify etc, but in the middle of a download). Everything freezes, but for example sound goes on normal (e.g. i watch a movie on any player, the sound keeps going, but the video, mouse, keyboard etc freeze). I then have to reset power and reboot. Funny is, that 1 day i can download several files without issues and then the next day (like today) it freezes 100% everytime i launch it (after a minute or 2).

Given the overall problem (system freeze), I'm not sure how I can relate this to SABnzbd itself.
You could try 0.7.6Beta1, where we did solve a CPU/memory issue, but that is
not enough to explain what happens on your system.

oh by the way, this occurs with both 0.7.4 and 0.7.5 final (fresh install, default settings). I am a bit confused aswell, since it only occurs, when i have sabnzbd running. No other application, game etc causes this.

Where can i download the 0.7.6beta1 please ?

thanks.

Update : installed 0.7.6beta1 and continued queue and it successfully finished the download and post processing (check, unpack etc).

I have a theory what may happend. My cpu is OC'ed (from 2.67 to 3ghz, fsb from 133x20 to 150x20@ 1.2v) while otherwise stable (e.g. battlefield 3, which is very cpu demanding and used to know to cause issues with overclocked systems, runs perfectly smooth), it may be possible, that the bug/issue that was in 0.7.5 and before , caused a severe stress of the cpu which may cause the system to become unresponsive. Just a guess, but i think its highly probable, that the 2 are linked. I keep you updated, if anything changes with 0.7.6beta1.

The problem in previous versions was one where one task in SABnzbd prevented another one from running.
It's a combination of high download speed, large NZBs, large article cache and a slow disk.
So far I have only been able to reproduce the issue on Apple OSX, not on Windows and Unix. But you never know...

well, didnt help either. I tried with cpu settings back to normal, nothing, tried 0.7.2/4/5/6 same. So i reinstalled windows :)

Only installed AV (Avira) and GPU drivers so far, aswell as 0.7.6beta1. No issues so far. Now i am going to install updates etc and see if anything changes. If ever it does, i'll let you know :)

ok update :

after fresh install, i downloaded 2 .nbz's completly without a hitch. Then i updated my windows with all the updates there were (130+) and now it crashes again (i.e. freezes my pc). So its a good guess, that 1 of the updates is screwing with sabnzbd (or the combo of them i guess). Going to uninstall one after another until there are no more freezes and let you know :)

update :

did a system restore to a point before the windows updates (basicly back to bare windows, gpu drivers and sabnzbd) and the issue is gone again. Going to install updates now in little batches of 10 and then check for stability until i find the one that causes the problems :)

I admire your patience.
Be on the lookout for driver updates.
Generic security patches aren't a very likely cause, because in that case your issue should
have been more widely reported.

yeah i think so too. Will let you know :)

update :

ok, installed all essential updates (important only, not optionals), i.e. security updates, .NET frameworks, Directx. Still stable and fine (had it download all night long random stuff, all fine).

ok found it. The faulty driver is the following

Ralink RT2500 USB Wireless LAN Card
Driver Version : 3.1.3.0
Date : 27.04.2010
______________________________________

this driver causes Windows (7, x64) to freeze when using Sabnzbd (any version it seems). It also seems to be highly unstable in general, dropping connection when downloading, etc.

Using an earlier version solves the issue.

I have been using this one for several days without any issues whatsoever (and i did a lot of downloading, since i wanted to recreate the issue i had)

Version : 3.1.0.0
Date : 09.10.2007

Good find.
In retrospect this is an obvious candidate: a network driver...
Is this card actually used for your downloading?

yeah, i used this card (more like an usb stick) for 4-5 months now without issue. Its possible, that the issue isn't caused "only" by that driver, but together with another recent windows update (conflict or something).

I too fixed this problem by reverting the Realtek PCIe GBE network driver on my Windows 7 PC to the prior version. I bet I had run into this before in a different but had forgotten the fix. I now remember that a few weeks ago I went into the optional Windows updates and selected the Realtek driver. Weird part is that this updated driver is actually years old.
