Help Needed - Script to verify download then delete

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to this and I'm not sure if this is even possible but hopefully someone can help out. I've searched the forums and can't find anything so not sure if it's been done before.

I have a VPS with an internet connection speed about 10 times faster than my connection at home. I have been using it to download files through usenet quickly, and once I know they are complete, i delete them off my VPS and download them at home (or if they fail, I know not to bother downloading them at home). I do this so I'm not wasting hours downloading something only for it to fail because there aren't enough repair blocks, or any other reason why a download may fail. It has been working well however my VPS only has 20gb of space on it, so I'm unable to do it on larger downloads (such as downloading a whole tv series in HD, which may be 30gb).
I want to know if there is a way to download the files, verify them, then delete them to make space for more files, which will allow me to verify large downloads that take up more space than my VPS has.

As I said before, I'm not even sure if this is possible, I don't really know the technicalities of how usenet actually works. If anyone has done this before, or knows if/how it is possible, it would be much appreciated to know.

(My VPS is running debian, but I can change this if needed)

Edit: I also want it to notify me if a download works or not. I don't really mind if it's by emailing me or writing it to a log file, just so there is some way of reading it the outcome. I assume writing it to a log file would be the easiest.

SAB 0.7.x has a pre-download check. Maybe that is useful for you on both your home system and VPS.
