Stuttering downloading

After assembling my new computer I enabled some performance-monitoring gadgets in Ubuntu. To my disappointment I saw that whenever SABnzbd+ finishes downloading a 50MB .rar-file it halts downloading completely for ~20 seconds. When you compare this to the ~80 seconds it takes to download the file then the in-line decoding adds ~25% to my downloading-times. I have buffering set to 256MB
The symptom is as follows: As soon as the articles are downloaded, one core pegs 100%, download-speed drops to 0kB/s until the file is assembled.
I've also noticed that if I alter the configuration and save then the same happens, but then the downloading stops for up-to a couple of minutes.
I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to improve this...
My system:
Intel C2Q 2.67GHz w/ 8GB RAM
SABnzbd+ 0.4.4
Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6 x86_64 (need Intrepid because my computer has the Intel G45 chipset)
