Highly erratic slow download rate

HI, first to set up the baseline background info:

Version: 0.6.15
OS: Standard QNAP TS-210 NAS
Install-type: QNAP QPKG installation
Skin (if applicable): Plush
Firewall Software: None, connected direct to Linksys home modem/router
Are you using IPV6? no
Is the issue reproducible? yes

After installing SAB and sick beard on the NAS it seems to finally be working after a few installs+removals+reinstalls. I am port forwarding 8800 to the NAS in my router for remote administation of SAB.

I have 100mbit optic fibre, the connection is able to acheive around 70Mbit sustained in practice over a http speed test.

However in SAB for some reason the speed is freqently dropping to around 10-100kb/sec for 2-5 minute periods, before spiking back up to 2mb/sec for ~30 seconds. In practice this equates to around 100-200kb/sec on a sustained basis.

When I examine my ethernet traffic rates, I see big black holes where almost no data is going through for minutes at a time, definitely not normal behaviour for a dl program connected to usenet.

Even more weirdly, when the download completes, when hovering over the clock icon on download history in SAB the popup says it has completed at 1-1.5Mb/sec average, often in around 6-10 minutes, however I can see each file is completing in the queue about once an hour, I don't understand how this calculation could be being derived so incorrectly.

Could this be a corrupt queue causing this? When I look in /download/sabnzbd/cache, the directory remains empty. I have also tried entering a cache amount of 32M, this doesn't seem to have fixed the issue.

I'm unsure which ocnfiguration info to give further, please advise,

many thanks in advance for any help offered.

Rob

The cache might (partially) solve this problem.
But 32M is not enough, it will only work if your cache is about 120% of the largest file you download.
So if most of your files are 50M rar segments, 60M should be enough.
For 100M, use 120M.
If you can spare the memory, make it higher.
Other than that, SABnzbd is not a speed king and uses up quite a bit of CPU time.

I'm having this exact problem right now. My speeds through the Newsbin client are reaching about 6 MB down which is slower than normal but close enough; however, for about the past few days I see fluctuation and and spikes EXACTLY how Bobster is describing in SABnzbd (0.6.15). I just set the article cache limit to 120MB. I had this problem when I was first introduced to SABnzbd and realized it was because autoprocessing was taking place whenever speeds dipped. I've since resolved that problem and now this has come up again for an unknown reason. As I'm typing this, something is downloading at 2KB/sec, stopped completely, and is now slowly starting to pick up again and...yep, now it's suddenty at 50 Mb/sec and dropping.

Any other ideas are appreciated.

First make sure it's not this particular NZB, by putting another one NZB at the top of the queue.
Also, set the option "Only get articles for top of the queue" in Config->Options off.
