Download Speed Drops when extracting

Post by RichMR2 »

Hey all,

I've been successfully using SABNZBD for years on my Windows7 media centre PC but it would give me major problems when watching HD movies while downloading (as one would expect). So I decided to pick up a net-top to run SAB, SB & CP. The spec is not that great but it looked like it should do, Intel Atom 2.15GHz, 2Gb Ram (does anything else matter?).

Anyway, basically what's happening is when my downloads are unpacking the download speed drops dramatically. Usually I get between 5.9MB/s and 6.2MB/s (50meg) but when extracting this will drop to anything from 500kb/s to 3.0MB/s until extracting has finished. Is this a hardware problem? Or is it down to rar? If hardware I'll have to start thinking about building something better than the net-top for this and reuse the net-top for something else, but would rather not. I didn't have this problem on Windows7 but then the media pc does have a much better cpu & twice as much RAM...

It also has had some issues while repairing (took over 7 hours to repair a 16Gb download!) but I'm lead to believe this is unavoidable due to how PAR works?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Edit: both complete and incomplete folders are on the box running SAB. In fact, everything is on the SAB box except the final locations of the files after post processing (they get moved to one of my many NAS' depending on what's downloaded - I don't believe that to be the problem though).

Yes, it is caused by the extracting on your Atom hardware.

But why do you consider it a problem? Are you in a rush to get the next download too?

My queue was reporting over a year to download, post processing of some of the queue was taking over 7 hours to repair, in this instance I was in a rush to have it complete some of the downloads. it meant cancelling completed jobs and reorganising the queue. Sure, once it's all up to date with SBs backlog it wont pose that big a problem, until I add a new TV show to SB, but I'd rather know if there is something that can be done to help speed things up if possible.

Also, if the average download speed is going to drop and the post processing queue have a lot of items waiting for repair/extract/processing I need to consider if it's worth paying the extra for the 50meg internet when the cheaper 20meg package wouldn't be any slower when considering the post processing too.

But thanks for the info, I'll have to decide if it's a big enough problem to warrant something better and using the nettop as a media centre for the guest bedroom/kitchen/garage/bathroom/where-ever.

Thanks
