Before I go very far into this, I am using a gateway m460 which is obviously old. But its not ancient ancient, I dont think it merits the 20 hour wait time it takes to verify and unpack.. This is consistent, whether Im getting my file from nzbmatrix or binsearch.

What could be causing this?

Verification/repair and unpack are done by two "industry-standard" tools: par2 and unrar.
If they are slow, the likely cause is your hardware.
BTW: par2 repairs can be extremely time-consuming even on faster systems.
