Well, try another Usenet downloader and see if that improves matters.

Okay so I did some more testing. I physically moved the mac mini into the same room as the modem / router and did some more troubleshooting.
I plugged the mac mini into the router (airport extreme) directly using an ethernet cable and turned wi-fi off. downloads shoot up to 1.2MB/s which is what I've capped it at.
I unplug the mini from ethernet and turn on wi-fi exclusively and downloads crash down to 100KB/s and the network takes a dump.
So either:
1) the router is having trouble with the bandwidth (unlikely since it works fine over ethernet and normal wi-fi browsing and downloading are not affected).
2) I have a weird port setting somewhere between sabnzbd and the airport extreme.
3) There's a setting or configuration that I don't know enough about that's causing conflict between my hardware / software set up.
4) wi-fi is too congested or some other weird phenomenon.
I'm going to ask the comcast installation tech to see if we can drill a hole from one room to the other, and rig something up for a direct connection possibly. But I would also be very upset If I did this (possibly against my apartment's wishes) and then a few days later ethernet starts exhibiting the same symptoms. Unlikely, but then again, wi-fi was working great for a while too....

also, thank you for all your quick responses shypike. It's definitely helping me narrow this down as much as possible. I'm the type of person that gets OCD about fixing issues like this haha.

Have you also tried an alternative program?
It would be a shame if you go through a lot of installation trouble only to find out it's SABnzbd related after all.

I'm seeing almost the exact same problem. My setup is as follows.
Internet Provider: Cox
Typical Speed: 15mb down / 4mb up. Measured with
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Usenet Provider: usenetserver.com
I'm running FreeNAS-8.0.4-RELEASE-p1-x64 (11059), sabnzbd 0.6.15 and sick beard on the same machine. It is WIRED into a gigabit port on the wireless router.
If there is an active NZB downloading sabnzbd will max out at 1.6mb down. If I run a speed test during this time I get less than 1.5mb down and 4mb up. As soon as i pause the NZB download and run the speedtest it goes back to the normal 15/4 speeds.

Is the "1.6" what SAB says? If so, do you realize it is "1.6 MB/s", which is 16 Mbps.

HA! Thanks. Sometimes it's the simply things.
