Sorry, I really can't help you with Synology things.
Hey Sander - thanks for your help in pointing me in the right direction - When I updated to the latest I hastily clicked through some important info:

You spotted it - windows ACLs. I needed to covert the shares on the Syno to Windows ACLs and then give read/write perms to the groups.
