I have 15 connections enable (20 allowed from Astraweb). Its really odd because it was working great the other day. Do I need to upgrade OpenSSL or something?

I don't know.
I have a whole bunch of Linux images running under VMWare and a few physical boxes.
None show this behaviour (and some are even using astraweb).

Well I am running Ubuntu Server 12.04 64 bit as well and do NOT have this issue.
rob@RobsUbuntuServer:~$ openssl
OpenSSL> version
OpenSSL 1.0.1 14 Mar 2012
It is 1.0.1-4ubuntu5.3 btw.

I would run Ubuntu from an persistent USB stick on the bare metal to rule out the VM stuff as cause for the SSL delay.
