Connectivity issue.

Post by VAW »

Hi all. 1st post. Hope you'll be easy on a nube.

If I'm posting in the wrong place, please move as appropriate. Thanks

I've had SABnzbd, Sonarr and Couchpotato installed and running for a few weeks. At times the DL speed seemed to drop to near zero, but then it would pick up to an acceptable level for a while. But, that's not what brought me here.

I'm not sure, but I don't think I've made any changes to affect this ... but now I have no connection.
# Connections: Failed to connect: (10038, 'Socket operation on non-socket') 10@news.giganews.com:563

I don't know what 'socket operation on non-socket' means. Can anyone advise please?

Could be a problem in the underlying operating system.
What are you using?

Sorry, I didn't read the rules before posting. The situation has changed since I posted. But, first some details on the system. Likely way too much info. Trying to think of everything that could be relevant. It's important to me to get this fixed. Let me know if I left anything out. Thanks!

PC: HP p7-1298c
AMD A10-5700
12GB RAM
Win7 Home Premium, 64 bit, SP1
SABnzbd Version: 0.7.20, Windows installer
Windows firewall
VyprVPN 2.7.0.4852
Python 2.7.9 amd64
Dedicated 4TB USB HD with 3.06TB Free
Comcast cable internet
Zoom 5350 modem/router

This desktop PC is not being used for anything else, other than BOINC crunching.
--------------------------------
I don't know what other information may be helpful.

As I said, the situation has changed a bit after I have tried to solve the problem with partial success.

I got it downloading last night, although at a much reduced rate. It was a useable rate(700-800 KB/s as opposed to 2500-4000 KB/s). Perhaps my ISP is throttling me.

THE CURRENT SITUATION:
I am connected, with a populated queue ... but nothing is moving. The connection will time out. And sometimes clicking the Refresh will re-establish the connection until the time out is reached again ... all with nothing downloading.

I have checked my internet connection by calling up other web sites. No problem.
The Time Warner Speed Test gives me from 8 to 20 Mbps download speeds.
https://www.timewarnercable.com/en/supp ... -test.html

In fact, this morning the only pages I've had problems loading were
http://sabnzbd.wikidot.com/faq
http://sabnzbd.wikidot.com/user-manual
http://sabnzbd.wikidot.com/
====================
I downloaded about 600GB in the week prior to the problem surfacing. That makes me wonder if my ISP is retaliating. But no connectivity problems in other areas. I have an unlimited Giganews account, so that shouldn't be the problem.
It just sits there. :-(

At the moment, I'm at full stop while my SABnzbd status shows
Server: news.giganews.com
Status: Enabled
# Connections: 6
==================
Could re-installing SABnzbd resolve the issue?
If I re-install SABnzbd, will configuration settings be saved?
==================
FYI: Norton attacked some files in my appdata folder overnight. I restored them via Norton and instructed the overzealous critter to leave that directory alone in the future. They were all pertaining to Sonarr, which now seems to be functioning correctly. Since SABnzbd has work in its queue, this shouldn't be a factor, correct?

I have uninstalled VyprVPN. Am now running without a VPN. And, it's WORKING!

At the moment, I'm downloading at 3.7 MB/s. I am not fully aware of the dangers of not using a VPN. Maybe if I limit my quota per day.

There's no need for a VPN with Usenet, especially if you make sure to have SSL enabled.

Perhaps. But, it does mean I should probably not include torrents. So far as I know (which ain't much) the VPN shouldn't have been a problem with usenet.

FWIW, I just tested with VyprVPN and I can't connect to Giganews with it either, but I can connect to other Usenet providers. Ironic considering VyprVPN and Giganews are the same. Seems like something we should e-mail Giganews support about, but it's not SABnzbd related.
