Stalls @ complete... but not forever

Post by absteeve »

Can someone help me understand what is going on?

I don't know if this is exactly a "problem", but at some point in the recent past my d/l's have been stalling at 100%. They just sit there in the queue for some time... several minutes to up to an hour. At first I was deleting them and trying again but I noticed that if I leave them alone, eventually they complete.

Why would that happen? What changed? What can I do to troubleshoot? The logs don't show... well, anything (they are blank as far as I can tell, but maybe I have to turn them on?)

I'm not a linux guru... I just manage. So go easy on me please.

What's Astraweb? Software or a usenet server? If software... I don't think so. If usenet server... no.

Ok Astraweb's Usenet service does often.
Do you have multiple servers in Config->Servers?
Don't set the timeouts too high (60 is usually fine).

The cause is usually a server that doesn't answer when it misses an article.
The combination of retries and a large timeout will make it stall for quite a while.

I do have multiple servers, but only one is checked with "enable" (the others were ones I used in the past and I guess I never deleted them because I wasn't sure which I would eventually use... but I've been with the same one for about a year and its fine. Should I delete them? Or it doesn't matter?).

Timeout is set to 120 seconds. I don't see "retries".

Thanks for your help.

The inactive servers don't matter.
Reduce the time-out to 60 sec or maybe even less.
Retries is in Config->Switches.
Default is 3.
Some experimentation might be worthwhile.

Which Usenet provider are you using?
