Apologies for the thread repeat, but I just plain can't get past this problem.
So I just installed sabnzbd on a Windows 7 machine and keep getting:
SABnzbd needs a free tcp/ip port for its internal web server.
Port 8080 on localhost was tried , but it is not available.
Some other software uses the port or SABnzbd is already running.
Please restart SABnzbd with a different port number.
Press Startkey+R and type the line (example):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SABnzbd-0.7.17\SABnzbd.exe" --server localhost:8081
If you get this error message again, please try a different number.
Program did not start!
Looking at netstat port data, that port isn't open, so I tried opening it in Windows and Norton firewall with no luck.
Then I tried using different ports and opening those, up to port 8090, no luck.
Tried reinstalling Sabnzbd, no luck there. Also tried different install means.
What am I missing here? It's gotta be something obvious.

Re: Open port issue
Do you have a software firewall (other than the Windows' built-in)?
If so, that's the prime suspect.

Re: Open port issue
Yup, that's the Norton Firewall I mentioned above. I suspected that first but have opened that port (and others) in the software and even added sabnzbd as trusted software. Neither has worked, but maybe it's still some configuration issue of which I'm unaware?
Re: Open port issue
We've had lots of trouble with software firewalls, which should be fully transparent, but are not.
Try a few more ports. If they all fail, its definitely the firewall.

Re: Open port issue
Hmm. So I've spent the last couple hours working with Norton and even just plain turned it off, no luck.
Here's what I tried:
Telling norton to allow sabnzbd to use any ports 8080 to 8090. No luck there
Turning off the firewall functionality of norton.
Trying specific ports rather than a range.
I'm out of options here, any have luck with these same issues?

Re: Open port issue
This will probably work: de-install & remove Norton firewall, reboot Windows, install and run SABnzbd.
