Check your connection in Status and Interface settings window.
Use Test Server in Config > Servers.

peeps is there a way to speed up the checking speed before it downloads a nzb ?

No, this is caused by the time the servers need to lookup articles.
Advise: only use the pre-download check if you must save every download byte.
Use the "Abort if completion is not possible" option in Config->Switches instead.
In most cases that is a) must faster and b) doesn't cost much more data.
It works best for avoiding removed posts.
Nowadays that's the major problem, not posts that are 99% complete and therefore not repairable.
The latter are fairly rare.
