Trouble after installing - no repsonse to "Show Interface"

Post by HoibO »

OK so I've come to SABnzbd at the suggestion of another user who raved about it and I thought I'd give it a try. I've downloaded and installed ver 0.7.11 on Windows XP Pro, SP3. Custom made aBit AMD-dual-core system, 2gB RAM, large disk about 1/2 full. I'm on the Admin account. Ordinary web traffic, browsing, eMail runs fine. I use IE8. I launch SAB, and I get a "SAB" tray agent in the notification area. Hover shows "Idle". Left click or double-left-click does nothing. Right click brings up a menu, the first selection of which is "Show Interface". Left click that and nothing happens. Same for "Open Complete Folder". Troubleshoot, Pause/Resume and Shutdown seem to work. So, this thing is "dead" from what I can tell.

So I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same thing. I've gone to the Wiki and read through. SAB does not report that port 8080 is in use. I use ESET Smart Security and have set SABnzbd to full allow status. SAB in SafeMode yields the same results. I've followed the troubleshooting advice for running sabnzbd-console.exe (note: the instructions to call sabnzbd-console contain a typo) from a cmd: prompt just throws me back to the DOS prompt. I expected to see some "server speak" in that window but none is forthcoming. On the first install, I did see such activity but could not get SAB to work. I've set SABnzbd to fully allowed in my firewall. Ping to 127.0.0.1 yields solid connectivity. My hosts file has one entry, that for localhost 127.0.0.1.

I'd like to try SAB out, but failing to get it to do anything is puzzling to say the least. So, I guess I need some assistance here in hopes that an expert can come in and give me some other ideas of what might be the issue.

Thanks.

Looks like a thorough research. Compliments!

First check: is sabnzbd.exe running in your process viewer / explorer?

Make sure SABnzbd isn't running, open a command prompt and type:
"c:\program files\SABnzbd\SABnzbd-console.exe" -l2
(That's minus el two)
Check for error messages about ports.

See this screenshot: Image

Then there's:

SABnzbd won't start!
This typically occurs because for some reason SABnzbd can't open port 8080, or whatever port you've set it to run on. Unfortunately, this could be caused by a wide variety of issues. Here are a few of them:

•Something else is running on the port. Either stop it, or have SABnzbd run on another port.
•Something is preventing SABnzbd from opening any port, like a firewall application, or antivirus, or something else that might be trying to "protect" you. Either whitelist SABnzbd or reconsider your antivirus software choice. (The very good and free Microsoft Security Essentials has no problem with SABnzbd)
•You lack the permissions to open the port you're trying. This tends to crop up on Linux systems, where ports under 1024 (like port 80) require root permissions to open.
A way to discover what's going on, is to open a 'terminal' or 'cmd'-box, go to the directory that contains the SABnzbd executable, and start that. On Windows, you should start "sabnzbd-consolese.exe". You should now see the output in the terminal/cmd-box.
Starting with SABnzbd 0.6.x, on Windows there's a "SABnzbd safe mode" which you should find in your Start menu; it can be useful to try that safe mode.

I see I have to first stop SAB -before- launching the console. OK, my mistake...

But, back to the screenshot, what's port 8085 doing there? I'm looking for 8080 aren't I? I went in to the .ini and changed 8085 to 8080. I probably should change it back. Also I note the last line says "Cannot register with GROWL". I'm unfortunately not really capable of interpreting this "chatter". Can you folks help me make sense?

Ahh! Perfection! Ran through the wizard, setup complete. Am now sitting at the SAB UI. So the port doesn't matter in that section of the .ini. I'm going to change it back to 8085.

You folks are the best! Wish I could have figured this out for myself, but...

Normally SABnzbd will start up the browser with the correct URL. Turn it on again: Config -> Switches, and then check "Launch Browser on Startup". It should be on.

Yes, indeed, I just went there. I'm testing a long D/L to get a feel for it. I'll restart everything later and try it fresh.

WoW! Look at all these Options! And one thing I really like is it keeps a record (History) of what's been D/L'd. GrabIt can't do that! No wonder that other user was so "high" on this... Very very nice.
