Stall on 64bit Mac - Tick Open in 32 bit mode is solution

Post by PetDie »

The last few version (currently on 0.7.3) I had big problems with downloading. Big files, multiple smaller files, after a while my internet connections (iMac late 2009, Snow Leopard 10.6.8) froze up. I could not leave the download unattended. Browsing or using the internet on one of the computers/iOs Pods on my network failed. I could see the download/network speed reduce to zero. Time left rose gradually to a few days. ZabNZBd was not responding, had to force quit the application. After restart of ZabNZBd I got my network access back and could resume the download. Usaually, after, 10-15 minutes the problem returned. I could not count on my mac to complete one single dowload. Very frustrating.

Tried every option in the ZabNZBd setup, nothing worked. Re-installed browser plugins, thought about reinstalling my whole system.

Then I got an idea. I checked the Open in 32-bit mode box on the ZabNZB application. Restarted the application and everything is as smooth as butter again.

Now I can leave the downloads unattended again

Interesting.
I have looked at 32bit versus 64bit before, but have never seen a difference.
Worth looking at again.

The reason I tried this is the struggle I had supporting a (very ancient) Cisco VPNClient application on various Mac systems.
It worked on my mac (64 bit) on 10.6.3, on a Lion Macbook of a colleague it only worked when booting up in 32 bit mode, on another Mac the client crashed on startup wether in 32 or 64 bit mode.
So looking into 32bit vs 64bit is something near to occult, anyones mileage may vary.
Still, I'm glad I found a way to get a solid download back with ZabNZBd - just wanted to share my solution.

SABnzbd runs on the native OSX Python interpreter.
This is a fully 64 program, so there shouldn't really be an issue here.
We do use two compiled C modules, maybe that can explain the difference.
Like I said, worth exploring and I will do that.

Turned out that switching from 64 to 32 bit mode had nothing to do with the problem. I noticed download stalls with other apps too, so I turned to my Cable Internet Provider. They found out there was something wrong with my cable modem, sent me e new one and now I'nm up and running full speed again.

Case closed, it had nothing to do with the software but with the connecting hardware.
