GUI causing download speeds to crawl

Post by swerve »

Problem Description: SABnzbd download speeds reduce ONLY when SAB GUI is on screen.

Details: Speeds slow to around 54 kilobits per second (I normally see speeds of 1.4 – 1.6 MB/s). Upon minimizing or putting the GUI behind another window the DL speed immediately goes back to normal. Due to the nature of the problem and how its produced it took me a day or 2 to understand fully that it was directly correlated to the SAB GUI being on screen. The first thing I immediately assumed was ISP throttling but I recently moved to a new state and started a new ACCT with Charter Cable and I am still within the first 30 days. I also have only ~30Gigs downloaded. Additionally I also have other computers on the network which maintain normal DL/UL speeds while my HTPC (Running SAB with GUI On Screen) gets severely choked up. I have had my HTPC running SAB for about 1.5 years maintaining 50 connections and SSL with NewsDemon and this behavior only recently started about 1 week ago. The DL monitor on the bottom of the screen is set to update on the standard 5 second refresh rate.

Actions Taken to fix: (What Shypike typically tells people to do)

In an attempt to fix the issue the first thing I

1)I noticed I was running an older version of SAB and immediately upgraded to the latest stable build 0.7.3. The problem persisted through this upgrade.

2) I reduced the number of connections from 50 to 15. This had no effect.

3) Cleared the queue & history. This had no effect.

4) Increased Cache size. This had no effect.

Checked log: Log shows no errors/warnings.

Things that may have broken it?

I did recently establish WOL for the HTPC which caused me to update the MoBo LAN driver and make some network config changes on the router running DD-WRT. I don’t see how this could be somehow linked with the GUI.

While this isn’t a critical bug in my opinion its very annoying. I don’t want to uninstall it and go through reconfiguring it over again only because it works so long as its minimized. I just wanted to post it up here to see if anyone has experienced this and knows a definitive fix for it.

I love SAB and I think you guys who maintain it and improve it do awesome work. Thanks!

Version: (Ex: 0.7.3 Final)
OS: Windows 7
Install-type: Windows Installer,
Skin (if applicable): Default
Firewall Software: none
Are you using IPV6? no
Is the issue reproducible? Yes
Browser: Chrome
Add-ons: sabconnect++

I did dl the executable and opened it up but I never had the chance to set it up. I did a quick check in the task manager for any running processes that could be related to It and found nothing. The exe Is not In my startup folder eIther

If there's a direct correlation between download speed and the UI being visible,
that point in the direction of a a UI script gone mad.
I mentioned CouchPotato because it recently queries the full history of SABnzbd repeatedly,
which is fatal for performance when you have a huge history.
This is not the case in your situation.
Other possible causes:
- A bug in the UI skin that you use (none known)
- A very high refresh rate of the Plush (default) or smpl skin
the minimum is 1 sec, which should be OK as long as you don't try all of a huge queue or history
Try setting it higher.
- A third-party browser add-on gone mad
- A third-party app interfacing with SABnzbd and gone mad

Things to try:
- Disable SABConnect++
- Clear browser cache
- Use another browser
- Higher refresh rate (more seconds)
- Pause, set SABnzbd's logging to Debug (Status page) and after a minute look in the logfile for "api" calls

I tried the following:

Uninstalling / Re-installing while maintaining config files: No Result
Running GUI on IE: No Result
Disabling Chrome Addon Sabnzbd++: No Result

I ran the log in debug mode:
