Sabnzbd stops regularly on Synology nas

Post by Dannermax »

Hello everyone.

Forgive me if im posting this the wrong place, but i didn't know where else to turn to.

I have this nagging issue with sabnzbd, that the package regularly stops, and i need to log into my nas software and start it again. This happens almost once or twice a day. Sab dosent report any errors. I have posted the last lines of sabnzbd.log before it stops, at the bottom of this post.

Im running the packages on a synology 207+ (dsm 3.1)
With packages:

Sabnzbd 0.6.15-2 (Superzebulon)
Python 2.6.6-5 (superzebulon)
Couch potato (superzebulion)
SickBeard (superzebulion)

I have tried following the steps here:
http://thanatosblog.wordpress.com/

I did the part under "trouble with sabnzbd" but at the part where i put in the lines in "/etc/crontab" i couldent find out where to put in the tabs as seperators, so i inserted tabs as seperators between the * symbols. Nothing else seemed logic to me. Perhaps i did it wrong? (Im a total noob to putty and vi editor).

This is the line im talking about:

*/10 * * * * root /bin/ash /usr/local/etc/checkSABnzb.sh
>> /usr/local/etc/checkSABnzb.log 2>&1

I've also seen this previous post on your forum:
http://forums.sabnzbd.org/viewtopic.php?t=4891&start=0

But i have already installed python, so im unsure if i can follow the same steps or just uninstall my python package (even thou its not the same version as mine) and enter the command lines.

Sorry for this long post, but this is bugging the hell out of me :)

What is your question?
You outlined that SABnzbd has problems on your system (the cause is indeed likely to be a lack of resources).
So you're looking for a way to work-around this problem.
Is your question about crontab? Is your complaint that the script doesn't run?

Oh sorry, forgot to specify what my question really is.

I just want to know what i can do to avoid sab from shutting down? And hear what others might think, could be causing this?
But your telling me (shypike) that it could be a lack of resources? Then what do you propose i do to reduce the resource consumption on my nas, so that sab wont shut down?

And my other question (if indeed the problem is resource related) How do i enter the crontab code the right way.. i dont understand the explanation thanatos' blog, and there seems to be alot of code experts in this forum..! Which i am NOT!

I hope my questions are more clear now.

Thank you for your time!

SABnzbd is just too heavy for some platforms.
Also, it's very dependent of the quality of the Python port for such a platform.
That varies a lot, especially for non-mainstream platforms.
There are very few tips to address memory problems, other that not setting
an article cache and avoiding very large queues and jobs.
Limit the amount "connections" per server to the minimum needed for a decent speed.

Crontab should work as advertised, I never noticed the need for tabs vs. spaces.
What is generally recommended is to use "crontab -e" for editing and not
edit the crontab file directly.

A appreciate your feedback shy. Gives me something to work with. One last thing. Could you specify what you mean by "crontab -e" ? I tried writing this in putty but it tells me that crontab is not found, even thou im in the right directory. And can i just "vi crontab" and remove what i entered and expect it to be undone?

The crontab now looks like this:

#minute hour    mday    month   wday    who     command
*/10    *       *       *       *       root    /bin/ash /usr/local/etc/checkSAB
>> /usr/local/etc/checkSABnzb.log 2>&1
ls /volume1/*.core.*
rm /volume1/*.core.*

I think i made a mess..
Thanks!

"cron" is the daemon (like a Windows service) that runs the scripts.
"crontab" is the program to check and set cron tasks.
Both use the system and user cron task files.
I have no experience with direct editing of cron files, because on all
standards-complying Unix systems, you're supposed to use the crontab program
and not directly edit cron task files.

Allright. Seems like ive done this the wrong way. Ill try to delete the text i inserted in the crontab file and try running it instead..

Again, thanks for your feedback!
