Slow download help!!

Post by muzza35 »

Hi to all,
I hope you can sort this out for me.
I have a BT infinity 40 MBps ISP service and I use Astraweb and sabNZBd (obviously). When I first started using it I was getting 38MBps downloads and my smile was wide. After about a month my speeds dropped to 4.4MBps maximum. They are always the same regardless of times I try downloading. I have tried all different port settings on astraweb, SSL and not SSL. I've tried a Binreader instead of sabNZBd and still no change and BT swear they are not throttling me.
Astraweb say try different ports or ask BT. BT say its Astraweb.
Who's lying to me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i'm just not savvy enough to sort this out.

Just checking: you're not mixing Bytes and bits? So: what is the exact amount SABnzbd is reporting ...?

4.4MB * 8 = 35.2Mb

You have 40Mb connection so its pretty much maxed out

Thanks to all for the replies so far. No is the answer to Sander. I'm not confusing the MB with the Mb. I average 4.3 MB on the last 10 downloads with SABnzbd.
Shypike, thank you for your suggestion. I'll try it. It's my my next move to go elsewhere, it's just a shame as everything was working perfectly for a while.
Exussum- I'm confused as to what your saying. Sorry but it makes no sense when nothing my end has changed except my download speed has dropped from 38MBps (max) to 4.4(max) with no change of port, connections, etc...?
I appreciate your time.

And that is exactly my point; SABnzbd reports in MB per seconds (like you say: MB), which you have to multiply by 8 or 10 to get mega-bits per seconds.

So your 4.3 MB/s is about 40 Mbps. Note the capital B (Bytes) versus small b (bits).

See the FAQ: http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/faq#toc29

Muzza35
There pretty much equal

http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/c ... icId=25633

Notice the small "b" when Mb is used, Thats Megabits though on the phone they will always say megabytes. There are 8 bits in a byte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte) so multiplying the 4.4 Megabytes by 8 (to get back to bits) or 10(because it makes the multiplication easier in your head) equals around 40 Mb. Or your connection speed. You can not have been getting 38MB as BT do not offer speeds that fast (38MB = 304Mb or 3 times the speed of the fastest BT product)

No answering your original question, None of the companies are lying, Their reps just didnt notice the difference between MB and Mb

Thank you to all for clearing that up. You have no idea how many times customer service have been unable to explain.
Did SABnzbd change the way it displays download speeds? I used to see it as Mb?
Maybe it was an old version..
Anyway, thanks for your time..

No, SABnzbd has always reported in MB/s. And it is always a point of confusion. ;)

Rule of thumb:
- ISPs, telco's,and usenet providers report in bits, because they look at the lower network layers. And because higher numbers look better
- Computer programs report in Bytes, because they store bytes (not bits) on harddisks.
- Taking into account the overhead between lower and higher layer, the factor is 10 between Bytes and bits.

Nah im pretty sure its just English speak, I would phrase it like that too.

Sabnzbd keeps logs so if you go back in your history and hover over the furthest left icon it will tell you how fast you downloaded - there shouldnt be any in there with more than 5 listed
