How to remove menubar status arrow in mac

I realize from googling this that what I am requesting is more likely the opposite of how most folks prefer.

I've got a mac running lion and I'd like to get rid of or somehow disable the little status arrow in my menu bar at the upper right hand corner.

how can I do this?
