SABNZBD on PC connected to VPN

Hi,

I'm having an issue connecting to SABNZBD via a Public IP address I'm hoping the smart people on here will be able to help:

I currently have SABNZBD running on my PC and I can access this from outside my network using my public IP address and the sabnzbd port, I mostly use NZBair on my phone to add downloads to Sabnzbd.

I have recently connected my PC to a VPN and all traffic now travels via the VPN, the issue i'm having is that I can no longer access sabnzbd using my public IP address

A couple of things >

1) If I go to another PC connected to the same network and type my local IP address and sab port number (192.168.1.2:8085) I can access sabnzbd fine. Seems like the PC is still responding to the local IP address.


2) When I try to use NZBair on my phone the below entry appears in my routers log:

"[LAN access from remote] from ###.###.###.###:32607 to 192.168.1.2:8085, Wednesday, April 04,2012 19:02:37"

192.168.1.2 is my PCs local IP address and 8085 is the port sabnzbd responds to. On my phone NZBair just shows an error message. I don't think this is a port-forwarding problem.


3) When I disconnect the VPN everything works like normal.

I really wouldn't want to have to disconnect and reconnect the VPN as most of the time I am not using this PC and don't have access to it and I do want sab to download via the VPN

Anyone know how I can correct this? I appreciate any help I can get on this, thanks

I think this is inherent in using a VPN.
The VPN will give your system a fake (and probably temporary) address.
Maybe it's possible to use a service like no-ip.com.
They'll provide a tool that will upload your VPN IP address to their service,
so that the DNS name they give you will be connected to this IP.
This does lower your total security level.

I'm not actually using the public IP address I get when connected to the VPN I'm still using the Public IP address I had before connecting to the VPN.

My reasoning was that the public IP address I had originally will get me to my router, (this happens as confirmed by the router log) and as my local IP address for my PC works within the local network surely I would of thought its just a matter of the router forwarding the connection to my local IP address? for some reason this isn't working.

When I change the IP address in NZBair to the new Public IP address given by the VPN I get no response on the port sab responds to.

You also need to tell SABnzbd to use the VPN-assigned IP address.
And tell your software firewall to allow external external access to SABnzbd.
You router will not be able to forward incoming traffic to your original IP to
the system running SABnzbd, because the system will probably only see the VPN as
its gateway to Internet.
