https has a red x in address bar

Post by jeller316 »

Hello, new to this forum and sab actually. I have searched around for an answer and found some information but I can't seem to wrap my head around it, any help would be appreciated. I setup sab on a windows 7 machine, everything works great. I use google chrome and when I go to the sab web page the https in the address bar has a red x on it and I get a warning about the certificate. If I click proceed it works fine. My question is am I still secure as in can anyone see what I am doing and is there anyone that has the time to explain to me how to fix the problem? Sorry if this is a repeated question or a newbiw one just don't know.

This is normal and a consequence of using self-signed HTTPS certificates.
Firefox is a bit nicer in that it allows you to store the certificate in the browser indefinitely
so that you see no further warnings.
The only alternative is to buy a certificate.

Thanks for the help, that's what I kinda gathered from searching on the web, do you know if what I am looking at or downloading is hidden still? Or is it worth it to buy a certificate? I guess I am not understanding the difference from an http vs https connection?

HTTPS uses an encrypted connection between the browser and SABnzbd.
This generally only useful when you expose SABnzbd's user interface to the Internet.
Third parties (like your ISP) cannot eavesdrop on the communication.
I wouldn't buy a certificate for this.

https://www.startssl.com/ offers 1 year SSL for free if you want to play around with certificates.
