First run opens my browser to an error page?

Post by bentbobb »

It installed fine (I guess). but when I run it for the first time it opens my browser (Opera) and goes to an error page that says
''çould not connect to remote server''

I searched the forum but didn't see anything resembling my problem.
After over 12 years as a faithful user of Agent I've been looking for something that's better for binaries. Newsleecher wasn't bad
but I quickly ran into it's limitations (can't filter spam worth stink). Someone on the forum recommended this program.

By the way, I'm on a spanking new intall of Win 7 64 bit and use Outpost firewall free 7.1 with Windows firewall turned off.
Thanks a bunch.

It's likely that your OS and your browser have different opinions about what "localhost" means.
Try http://127.0.0.1:8080/sabnzbd or http://[::1]:8080/sabnzbd

...and what do I do with that information?
I don't get any screens, windows, or places where I can input the URL when I start SABnzd. My browser simply pops up with the error message. If I put either of those URLs into the Google search window (where the error message is) it simply gives me a bunch of search returns to this forum. I'm assuming that there is a configuration page in SABnzb that is being bypassed where I'd input my NNTP server information? Is there a way I can access it, or input the address without starting the program, an INI file perhaps?
Thanks again and sorry about being so dense,
Bob

Use the Windows Start menu and find "SABnzbd - Safe mode".
Also tell your Firewall to leave SABnzbd alone.
But first make sure SABnzbd is no longer running, stop it using the Task Mananger.

Argh!...
I'm afraid that SABnzd doesn't appear in my start menu in 'safe mode' or any other mode. It's not there at all. I uninstalled and reinstalled it but got the same results. I also tried to run all the exe's in the installed directory but got nothing but dos boxes that disappeared almost instantly. Trying to use the help information in the installed.txt file. Will see how it goes.
...still confused but working at it.

Can you try this:

Open a CMD-box/terminal.
In that CMD-box, "CD" to the directory containing SABnzbd-console.exe (so: C: , then CD PROGRAM FILES<TAB>, etc).
Then, in the SAB-directory, type "sabnzbd-console.exe"<ENTER>,

The output should now stay visible.

I'm deleting SABnzbd. I've got many programs that seem to have no problem accessing the internet. Why is SABnzbd the only one that can't find it's way to the net? I can only assume it's the program's fault, not mine. I'm no programmer and I'm not going to spend hours screwing with it. I'm going back to Agent which I've used for over a decade now. It just works. I've tried numerous newsreaders over the past few months but none of them work as well as Agent, despite it's shortcomings. ...and after my experiences, those shortcomings don't seem so important anymore compared to programs that locked up, crashed, hosed downloaded material, forgot where they where, 'lost' settings or couldn't do something as simple as show a configuaration screen on first run. The fourty bucks to support ForteInc is well worth it.
