Need help maxing out connection

I know this has been asked many times in other forums (example: http://forums.sabnzbd.org/viewtopic.php ... ews#p55835) but i have not been able to find any helpful information. When I do a speedtest my results show between 35-45 mbps down and about 5 mbps up. whenever i download anything using sabnzbd or any other reader for that matter there is a huge spike in the first 2 seconds and then speeds drop to 1.5-1.7 MBps where they stay at. I know that it sounds like my isp is throttling because it jumps and then falls but I have cox cable and from all of the research i have done everybody says that they do not throttle. If anybody can help me achieve my full speeds i would be extremely appreciative. Thanks much

When you use another newsgroup downloader (nzbget, or - if you use Windows - grabit), what's the speed?

I have tried sabnzbd, nzbvortex, and unison and get the same results across the board. It's odd because it truly seems like I'm being throttled (which makes no sense because cox doesn't do this and because it was happening since day 1; my first download. Which means it couldn't be throttling. I don't know if it is related or not but I cannot download a torrent above 1.5-1.7 either which made sense because cox DOES throttle p2p I just thought the numbers were too suspicious to overlook so easily. I have also read numerous accounts of other cox subscribers who have the same Internet package as me and yet have maxed out connections. Also I have giganews diamond and when I emailed them for help the told me all was fine on their end and that I had a great connection to their servers. I am just so confused

Are you using a wireless or a wired connection? Starting testing with a direct, wired connection to your modem/router.

I have just checked and it makes no difference whether I am wired or not, It still mass at 1.5-1.7 every time

Can you connect your PC to another, non-cox, non-comcast Internet-connection? If so, and if you then get a sustainable higher rate, I would say the problem is in your Internet-connection (not your OS, nor SAB, nor your computer), and you should contact Cox, or change ISP.

Is it ok to talk to cox about newgroups etc.? And am I correct that something is wrong here? Just before I call and complain I wanted to be sure what to say haha. And do you think they are lying about throttling me? And if so why did it start before I even downloaded my first thing? Thank you for the effort and anything else will be much much appreciated.

My thought: if an ISP throttles P2P (which Cox confirms they do according to some websites like http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Cox- ... ling-89571), I would expect they also throttle the other bandwidth hog called newsgroups / usenet; their goal is to give priority to smaller downloads and interactive traffic, and thus less prio to multi-GB-traffic. (And no, it's too difficult to see whether your newsgroup download is only 100MB instead of 10GB).

So: does cox.com say anything about throttling? Or is it just the second hand information?

If there is no information on cox.com on throttling (p2p or other), is it useful to call them about throttling? Well ... I fear not; the person on duty on the first line helpdesk probably doesn't know what throttling is, and as it's not on their website, it will not be in the 1st helpdesk scripts.

So because of the above I gave you the advice to try someone else's connection. If that faster, you can decide to switch ISP.

FWIW: My SABnzbd downloads at 3.4 MBps (over Wifi), so that's no problem for SAB.
