Speed Limiter not functioning properly

In past versions, the speed limiter worked just fine...but in the latest ones, it's all over the place.

I recently moved back home and we have 3000/768kbps internet, so I lock down sabnzbd to 250KB/s and it still routinely hits my bandwidth cap. I've attached netmeter of how it works when the limiter is on and off.

While on 250KB/s limiter:

As you can see in the graphs above, it is all over the place when the limiter is on. In past versions this was not a problem. It makes gaming while sabnzbd'ing impossible.


Anyone else notice this?

You could start by giving some more info.
Version? Operating System?
Where did you set the limit? Config->General or in the the main UI?
SABnzbd's limiter cannot smooth out, it just pauses between chunks of 32K.

It seems like this past version update did this become more of a problem. Set the limit on the GUI.

I cannot reproduce it on my Win7 system.
The speed is a bit wobbly, like it's always been, but no persistent high levels.
Try telling your router to give NNTP traffic (or the ports you sue for it) a low QoS priority.
It looks like you have ADSL, in which case most trouble is usually caused by a saturated upload channel.
SABnzbd does need to send article-ids to the server.
But even then it's hard to imagine such results.
There haven't been changes to the download part for quite some time.
Any idea which earlier SABnzbd did behave better?

Unfortunately, my router's QoS settings are worthless at best.

It's really hard to say. I recently moved from a location that had 15000/768kbps cable connection to this ADSL connection...so I never really needed to throttle it back until now. Several years ago I had to throttle it back when I shared my connection with roommates, but the past year or so it wasn't an issue.
I downgraded to 0.6.5 and the issue is even more noticable...it bursts to my connections max, then slows way down, then bursts to my connections max again.


As for the uploading, I can see that...but I only am hitting about 5-6KB/s tops while downloading, well under my connections rated max upload speed.

Possibly you need to go back to 0.5.6.
But even then I can think of no changes that would influence this.
Given that I cannot reproduce the issue at all, I would need further feedback from you.

0.5.6 seems to make no difference at all. Still 1-3 seconds of full-speed followed by 1-3 seconds of nothing.

Perhaps it's just an oddity of my connection. I can provide any feedback you want.

I assume you're not using a WiFi connection?
Other than that, there's not much to look for.
Like I said, our speed control is limited and by its nature irregular.
You'd really need to tweak your router's QoS settings or use a software bandwidth limiter on your PC.
NetLimiter3 works fine, but it is not exactly free.
