System requirements
I'm sure this would have been asked before however I can't seem to find anything, my question is what is the minimum system requirements for ubuntu installation? I have an older computer that I'm thinking of putting ubuntu on for a download server but it just meets the system requirements for ubuntu and I'm wondering if it will run smoothly with sabnzbd. and if Sabnzbd is compatible with Xubuntu am also running sabnzbd on a windows PC however I don't think it is fully capable so i want to know what the system requirements are for that as well.

It would help if you told the system specs (RAM + CPU) of your machines, and which Ubuntu version (the plain version thus with X, or the Server thus without X).

The Windows machine is a AMD Athlon 2400 with 512MB Ram, The other machinethat I want to run Ubunyu on is a Pentium 4 not too sure at the GHz but in the range of 2.4 to 2.8 GHz with 256 MB Ram, I am open to which Ubuntu version to run as long as it does the job I have downloaded 11.04 desktop but an earlier version might be more compatible, I was thinking of using the i386 desktop version.

The plain Ubuntu version on a 256 MB RAM system is not going to be useful. You could try the 512 MB system. If that runs Ubuntu OK for you, it will run SABnzbd.
But what is the goal of your exercise? And: From which machine are you using Internet and posting in this forum? Can't you use that machine to run SABnzbd?

I have read the system requirements, an earlier version of ubuntu might work better because of lower system requirements? the windows machine is not downloading at full speed all the time and the mouse become jerky after it's been running for a while not sure why the CPU is not maxing out most of the time and it not using 100% of the ram that's why I want to try Linux.

I would say this is a Ubuntu question, not a SABnzbd question. So probably better to go to http://ubuntuforums.org/
