it's alright i've now checked everything again:
- the SABnzbd folder in the start menu (not startup menu) from the most recent install has the -b1 parameter, but other older shortcuts that had been created (probably by me) didn't have the -b1 parameter (since the previous version did not explicitly require it and it must have been copied from the older shortcut).
So adding -b1 to the shortcut has solved the issue.
