Sabnzbd 0.6.1 Intermittent crashes and pulsating downloads

Post by ZephyrFox »

Version: 0.6.1
OS: Windows XP Pro x64 Version 2003 SP2
System: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3GHz, 4GB RAM
Install-type: Windows zip
Firewall Software: none
Are you using IPV6? no
Is the issue reproducible? kinda

Issue #1: Intermittent crashes
About 3-4 times a week, sabnzbd will crash. The crashes occur irregularly but consistently. It's own log file produces nothing particularly useful:

Code: Select all

example 1
2011-05-24 10:27:34,812::ERROR::[downloader:502] Failed login for server secure.usenetserver.com:443
*** crashed here (see Windows event log below) ***
2011-05-24 13:52:21,750::INFO::[_cplogging:55] [24/May/2011:13:52:21] ENGINE Bus STARTING

example 2
2011-05-22 16:18:01,342::ERROR::[__init__:802] Loading d:\_nzbs\temp\somedir\__ADMIN__\SABnzbd_article_0viqs2 failed
*** crashed sometime here ***
2011-05-22 18:57:27,092::INFO::[_cplogging:55] [22/May/2011:18:57:27] ENGINE Bus STARTING
Windows event log provides the following for example 1 above but nothing for example 2:

Code: Select all

Event Type:	Error
Event Source:	Application Error
Event Category:	None
Event ID:	1000

Issue #2: Pulsating (for lack of a better word) downloads
Occasionally the DL rate will begin to drop and spike. Rate will suddenly drop from the (otherwise consistent) 2-3 MB/s to idle and then spike back up. A restart will resolve the issue. If left alone, sabnzbd will eventually return to a consistent rate but can take anywhere from minutes to hours. Logs appear to show nothing out of the ordinary.

SABnzbd crashing like this is an extremely rare event that's hardly ever reported.
It also something beyond our control, since it  crashes in a part of the language runtime we use.
It's actually very hard to cause true crashes in a Python program.

You're second complaint could be something with the server
or the way SABnzbd reacts to it. Without more details it's very hard to tell.
Communication is along chain in which any part might encounter issues.
There could very well be a SABnzbd problem, but like I said, hard to tell from this.

Thanks for your reply, appreciate the time and effort you've put into this project.

FWIW, after playing around with settings for the past few days, I noticed that larger article cache values seemed to cause the crashes more frequently. With it set at 512M or larger, it was crashing every few hours. It's probably some quirk with ActivePython and XP x64- I'm just going to move things to a different box. Thanks again!

Hi,

I have the exact same issue.

Win XP Home SP3
Intel Pentium M 1,73GHz - 1GB RAM

The situations is exactly as ZephyrFox describes it for me as well, although I don't have any speed issues.
Event with 64MB for cache, the problem is still there.

Thanks,
kostas

What can I say?
Very few people see this issue.
