Drastic drop in download speed after update to 3.1.1 on Synology NAS

Post by sladflob »

Hi, I just updated the SABNZBD installation on my Synology NAS to 3.1.1 and my downloads seem to be limited to 2.2 MB/s. I used to get around 10-11 MB/s on a 100 Mbit/s connection. This upper speed limit seems very precise. I've checked obvious things like the line speed setting, and that the percentage, and they both look ok. I've checked the total memory usage while downloading and it is less than 50%. I've also tried other downloads (using Transmission) and they manage to max out my connection, so I don't think it's a hardware or network issue. I'm a bit stumped as to what it could be. Can anyone shed any light on what else I should be looking at?

Thanks.

In the Status and Interface settings window (the wrench icon), what statistics do you get when you run the diagnostics for disk and internet?

Is there some way that your ISP can be limiting traffic? Or the Synology limiting the application?

I don't think so. I have another experimental installation of sabnzbd on a Pi 4 and that is running at full speed. I also have Transmission running on the Synology and just did a download that hit 11 MB/s. It's very weird. The only other thing maybe worth noting is that Python also updated to 3.7.7-15 at the same time.

Unless you have any other suggestions, I might tomorrow uninstall and reinstall sabnzbd on the Synology and see if it helps. It's a bit of a pain as I have a few custom settings. I guess I can take a copy of the config.ini file.

Looks like ... 10 Mbps. So ... old-skool ethernet. I would check cabling switch router etc.

And: copy something from Synology to your local disk ... what speed do you get? And the other way around? That is LAN-only, so does not depend on your ISP / Internet

EDIT:
Transmission ... that hit 11 MB/s.
Sure it's MB/s and not Mbps?

Entering the realm of straw-clutching here, but yes, definitely got my MB and Mb the right way around. The Synology network status is reporting "1000 Mbps, Full duplex, MTU 1500". Cables and switch are all untouched from the day before when I was seeing downloads of 10 MB/s, but just checked again and the port is definitely showing 1 Gb. I just tried copying a file onto the NAS from a laptop connected to the switch and saw it hit 100 MB/s (yes, bytes). So I think the Synology's network interface etc is fine.

So I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling (using the same config.ini file) and same deal. So I uninstalled and manually installed the previous two versions from spk files (again, using the same config file) and it does the same thing. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version and set up the config file from scratch and it STILL only downloads at 2.3 MB/s. I'm totally flummoxed. Is there a command I can try to see what download speed Python is seeing or is that basically what the network diagnostics do?

edit: also tried reinstalling Python 3 and then reinstalling sab... same story, 2.3 MB/s

OK ... let's do a further test. You need access to your synology's command line (via ssh or telnet) ... are you able to do that? If so:

Get and run the script from https://github.com/sanderjo/python3-spe ... t_speed.py

Running on Synology would be something like this:

Code: Select all

$ /volume1/@appstore/sabnzbd/env/bin/python3 get_file_and_report_speed.py
No URL specificied, so using default
Start getting http://speed.transip.nl/100mb.bin
/tmp/tmplx9ewb36 104857600 10.295416116714478
Speed in MB/s: 10
Report back your experience.

Thanks so much for the help. Command line is no problem.

My output is:

Code: Select all

get_file_and_report_speed.py
No URL specificied, so using default
Start getting http://speed.transip.nl/100mb.bin
/tmp/tmp4qcxy5pw 104857600 110.17871999740601
Speed in MB/s: 0.9
I've tried it a few times and get around 0.9 every time.

So it is not related to SABnzbd.

So is python3 or python-generic or system related ... ?

Alas my script is not compatible with python2.

System wide check: if you have 'wget' installed on your Synology:

Code: Select all

wget 'http://speed.transip.nl/100mb.bin'
... what is the output, including the speed?

You're not using a slow IPv6 tunnel or VPN, are you?

Yes, I'm starting to suspect it's Python 3 related.

Using wget gives me this output:

Code: Select all

100mb.bin           100%[===================>] 100.00M  5.29MB/s    in 23s
So still not maxing out the connection but a lot faster than 0.7 MB/s.

Nope, not using any VPN or Tunnel.

I'm wondering if I should try downgrading my version of Python3?

Downgrade your Python3 to which version?

I'll see if I can write a Python2 compatible script to see if there is a difference between python2 and python3

Well 3.7.7-14 was the version that was installed before the update, when things seemed to be working.
