Failed login 90% of the time

Post by Mastakilla »

Hi all,

Since a couple weeks I'm having issues with downloading.
90% of the time I'm getting errors like "ERROR: Failed login for server news.dommel.be" (every 10 minutes) and 10% of the time all is working fine at full speed. (so the passwd I'm using is certainly correct).

http://pastebin.com/KHHaTVE8

Above is the log of me downloading Ubuntu for example (but I have it with all downloads).

In short:
14h26 Login failed
... 10 minute timeout
14h36 Login failed
... 10 minute timeout
14h46 Downloading!
...
15h00 Login failed
... 10 minute timeout
15h10 Downloading!
...
15h17 Download complete!

And here some SabNZBD screenshots:

My news provider tells me to "remove all headers" and try downloading again, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that with SabNZBD (I also suspect this is not relevant for binaries - please correct me if I'm wrong)

Could you maybe lower the connection count? For example if you have 20, lower it to 18.
Sometimes when there's a timeout for example in the connection, SAB will re-connect but the newsserver will say the connection is still open and thrown an error. The server should say 'Too many connections', but sometimes it just sends 'Wrong login' etc.

A short while back someone came by on irc with the very same issue. Unless that was the topic starter himself, the common denominator is this specific usenet server of belgian isp 'dommel'.

If it was on 13 November as well, then it was me on IRC too...

My connection count is 12 (normally this is the max of my provider).
A couple days ago, I already tried lowering it till 1, but that didn't seem to help :/

Thanks for the tip though...

No, guess the other guy was a week or so ago so that must have been someone else. Exact same dommel usenet server though, same issue, same timeframe in which trouble started...

Because you are after all a Developer, I decided yesterday night to re-try my findings with only 1 thread.
So I've updated the setting to 1 thread, rebooted Windows completely and started downloading something randomly big.

The problem indeed still occurs, but I now do notice that the "time out"s that occur happen independently from the "login failed". (I thought "login failed" always followed the "time out" messages)
With only 1 thread and downloading from 0h07 till 8h35, 27 "time out"s occured and 4 "Failed login"s.
The 27 "time out"s are spreaded over the whole night, with random intervals in between where the download did work fine (sometimes it downloads 45 minutes fine in a row and sometimes it just keeps on timing out every few minutes).
The "Failed login"s occured only from 3h53 till 4h23 (with 10 minutes between each).

My hypothesis: there is something wrong between the Highwinds newsserver front-end and the Dommel-AAA-backend (AAA = authentication accounting and authorization). And there is nothing you can do about that, other than complaining at Dommel.be. Or switching news provider.

I see no other exlanation for login-problem if you have one thread. Well, that is: assuming you're the only with that news account, and it's not used on any other device in your home or anywhere else. Easy enforcement of that: reset your news.dommel.be password, use that new password, and try again with one thread.

FWIW: proof that it's a Highwinds reseller:

Code: Select all

$ host news.dommel.be
news.dommel.be is an alias for newsfarm.ams2.highwinds-media.com.
newsfarm.ams2.highwinds-media.com has address 81.171.92.222
newsfarm.ams2.highwinds-media.com has address 81.171.92.236
newsfarm.ams2.highwinds-media.com has IPv6 address 2001:4de0:1::222

Nope. Suspected server side issue, but at the time had only a single person complaining. Something along the lines of what Sander suggested doesn't sound unlikely, in which case only dommel can really see what's going on. So you know where to go next ;)

Email send to the dommel helpdesk and they replied that they've forwarded it to someone to look in to it.

Thanks
