Ok.
I've done more extensive testing.
I typically download 8-15GB files. I use Astraweb as my main download service and easynews as my backup.
I signed up with Supernews and use it as my backup and now things work much better.  I'll experiment further and post my results.

anyone know of any european usenet providers with 600+ days of retention?
