I have this same problem. It only occurs when connecting via https. Everything works as expected when connecting via http; it does not substitute the hostname for the internal network IP address when using http. But then, the whole reason to use https (for me, and I'm assuming for just about everyon...

I would also love to see this. I'm not sure if licensing allows for it, but WordPress 3.1.x does a fantastic job of this. As an open source tool, you can probably borrow at least the javascript / html front-end portion of it.
